What we are reading

We have been reading aloud a variety of books. Two nights ago we finished The Arabian Nights retold by Neil Philip and Illustrated by Sheila Moxley. This was not a complete set of the tales, but included the favorites Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Aladdin. Maia's favorite tales were The City of Brass, Princess Nur Al-Nihar, the Three Princes, and Peri-Banu, The Speaking Bird, the Singing Tree, and the Golden Water, and The Ebony Horse.

We have also started reading stories from Greek and Roman Mythology. We read about Hades taking Persephone down to the underworld to be his wife, the minotaur and the labyrinth, the Trojan horse, and various others. Stories explaining the start of the world seem to be fascinating to Maia right now.

Last night we resumed our reading of The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer. We backtracked a little so the various stories and time periods would be equally well remembered.

Cribbage

Walter taught Maia to play cribbage. In cribbage you score by making totals of 15 with combination of cards, as well as pairs and runs. In addition, three and four of a kind score as 3 and 6 pairs, which is the number of distinct pairs you can make. Similarly, a hand such as 2-3-3-4 scores as two runs (and a pair). So it is an introduction to combinatorics (the mathematics of counting was of combining and ordering things) as well as simple counting and addition.

Reading About Narnia

So Maia has been immersing herself in the Narnia stories. We have finished reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe aloud. We finished reading the first book in the series - The Magician's Nephew. We are in the middle of The Boy and His Horse now. We have also been watching Prince Caspian a lot. She is comparing the characters in the two stories. She is comparing the storylines, the ways the kids entered Narnia, the different relationships between the various main characters, and much more. Many lines of the movies have been memorized. When there is dialog in the movie and not in the book, she points it out. We talked about ruins, preserving objects for a long time, how to handle a wild animal encounter, and much more.

Yesterday, we picked up an I Can Read! #2 book entitled This Is Narnia. It is based on the Prince Caspian movie. Maia sat down and read it cover to cover immediately. Here are the words she asked for help reading: waited, amazing, queens, sparkling, clothes, behind, beautiful, trouble, soldiers, Trumpkin, challenged, bedsteads, greedy, evil, sounded, adventure. Of course, after reading the book several times, she has got those words down now.

A New Violin!

We recently made a one for two violin trade and Maia benefits! We traded Evan's pricey half size violin for a quarter size instrument for Maia and a full size instrument for Evan and Mom. Now we can all play the violin when we choose. Maia is beginning lessons at home while she figures out how much she enjoys this new activity.

Dictated by Maia:
I like playing my new violin.
